Christmas Conclusion
Before I finished off the tamales and before re-packing Christmas decorations until next year, I reflected on two questions:
What were the voices of Christmas?
What did they say to me?
Throughout the Christmas season, I listened attentively to choral music and carols, hearing the inescapable music of my faith. I felt a personal connection to the promises of ancient prophets and the challenging proclamation of John the Baptist. I imagined the voice of the Angel Gabriel speaking to Zachary and Elizabeth, then to Mary and Joseph.
I was captivated by the voice of an ancient Caesar declaring a census, which sent the Holy Family from Nazareth's silence, warmth, and security into the cold, damp cave on the hillside of Bethlehem. I was intrigued by the Wise Men from the East following their star and asking where they might find the newborn king. I was moved by the choirs of angels proclaiming to the shepherds and the world: "Glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth…" Finally, I followed the shepherds on Christmas morning and came again, as they did, to find Mary and Joseph and the baby Jesus lying in the manger.
Currently, the voices and the choir of angels are silent. As the infant, Jesus rests silently in the manger.
But I hold fast to the wonder and praise that this past Christmas brought me. Reflecting on and praying about them in my heart, hearing the voices of Christmas, and exploring Nazareth and the Nativity continue to present me with a timeless challenge: to speak the word of the Lord, mainly in my deeds and actions with all whom I encounter and in whatever pertains to God's will.
Standing beside Him, I begin this new year of favor in communion with compassion and faith.
