Earth Day
Spring unfurls around us, and the sun shines with renewed warmth, inherent value, and breathtaking beauty that reflects the Creator's love. April traditionally celebrates Earth Day, a month to recognize our planet's awe-inspiring beauty, interconnectedness, and the gift of our common home.
But amidst the celebration, a more profound reflection is needed, one that resonates with the urgent call issued by the now-deceased Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Si': Care for Our Common Home.
His spiritual and ethical writing reflects on our relationship with creation. It challenges us to move beyond a superficial understanding of environmentalism. It emphasizes the intrinsic dignity of every creature, symbiosis, and the moral imperative to care for the planet that sustains us.
Reflecting on my outdoor experiences, I recall a metaphysical connection with "Earth" that shifted my perspective and made me feel God's presence. It was on the ridge of Garrapata Canyon, New Mexico, and a distant storm entertained me as the tranquility of the Juniper Trees and the canyon's red rock surrounded me with a sense of awe and reverence. Then, I realized the importance of my relationship with creation and the need to protect it.
Pope Francis didn’t shy away from the stark realities of the earth's ecological crisis. He spoke with clarity about the devastating impacts of pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource depletion. His call to conversion deepens my experience in my heart and mind. It affirms my cultivation of an 'ecological spirituality' that recognizes God's presence in creation and fosters a sense of responsibility toward it.
I encourage you to take the time to truly listen to the 'cry of the Earth' as Pope Francis urges us while celebrating Earth Day. Let Laudato Si' be our guide as we reflect on our own relationship with creation and commit to actions, however small, that contribute to healing our common home. These actions could be as simple as getting outdoors and connecting with nature, reducing plastic use, or planting sustainable plants.
