High Desert Views & Highway Convenience

Traveling across North America in my truck has been one of the most rewarding adventures of my life. The views, people, places, and surprises I’ve come across are hard to put into words. I’ve learned so much along the way, and I want to share one of those lessons: the importance of highway convenience while exploring.

It’s important to have a reliable basecamp after a day on the road, especially when you know what comforts are waiting for you. I’ve learned that fatigue can set in and make driving unsafe if you push too far. After a long drive, KOA campgrounds are my go-to spots for recharging, getting cleaned up, and restocking. My favorite is the Las Cruces KOA in New Mexico. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time, especially during busy travel seasons or weekends. It’s easy to book a site through the KOA website or app, and you can often request a spot with the best views. If you’re planning a late arrival, just call ahead so the staff can give you instructions for checking in after hours. These small steps make arrival much smoother and ensure you get a great spot to unwind.

The KOA in Las Cruces, New Mexico, sits right on the edge of El Paso and southwest of White Sands. Unlike most highway stops, it’s on a hillside with wide-open views of the Mesilla Valley and the Organ Mountains. The historic area of Mesilla is just minutes away, where you can enjoy adobe plazas, old architecture, and amazing New Mexican green chile dishes. For a memorable afternoon, I recommend strolling through the Mesilla Plaza, visiting the San Albino Basilica, or exploring one of the local art galleries. If you have extra time, take a detour to White Sands National Park for otherworldly landscapes or enjoy a scenic drive along the Organ Mountains–Desert Peaks National Monument.

After a 10-hour drive, my wife, my Jack Russell Rusty, and I were ready for a break before another long stretch to Flagstaff. I remembered the Las Cruces KOA from my childhood and a visit about ten years ago, so I was familiar with the area and the mountains. What really stood out this time were the renovations done by the owner, Chris, and his team since my last visit. KOA’s theme is “connecting guests to the outdoors through specific amenities and hospitality.” Chris truly believes in this. The dog park here became Rusty's favorite hangout spot—it's spacious, fully fenced, and has real grass for those hot afternoons, so he could run around safely while we relaxed nearby. I also really appreciated the pool area. With a large RV area, a kids’ park, a pool, and a dog park, this stop has a lot to offer.

We found our site easily, dropped the tailgate, set up a camp chair, and watched as the city lights of Las Cruces started to shine below while the desert air cooled. It’s the perfect mix of rustic camping and a front-row seat to a beautiful New Mexico sunset.

This place is more than just a spot to park for the night. It’s a great starting point for exploring southern New Mexico.
