Realizing Valentine’s Day
Valentine's Day means so much more to me thanks to my wife's insights and the wisdom of a first-century Bishop. Their perspectives have enriched my understanding and deepened my appreciation for this special day.
As a child in grade school, Valentine's Day was hard to understand. My first memory of Valentine's Day was in grade school, seeing chocolates and funny little cards that classmates gave to each other. "Be Mine," "Sweet Kisses," and the word L O V E were inscribed on little pieces of candy that I spiritlessly lined up on my school desk to make sentences. All the while, boys and girls gawked at each other. Weirdos.
Today, my perspective on Valentine's Day has transformed, shaped by the deep connections in my life. Rather than getting caught up in the usual gifts, I cherish the meaningful relationships, especially with my amazing wife. She seeks nothing more than the genuine effort that comes with marriage—two imperfect individuals aiming for perfect love. This inspires me to intentionally nurture our bond every day, reinforcing how special our connection truly is.
The daily effort of nurturing relationships instead of focusing solely on material gifts is a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. This ongoing commitment to loving one another leads to beautiful expressions of affection, enhancing our everyday joy. It's inspiring to remember that Bishop Valentine of Terni, who is honored on this day, dedicated himself to serving others. His legacy reminds us that true love looks outward, encouraging us to walk together hand in hand, united in purpose and compassion. Let’s embrace this spirit of love not just on Valentine’s Day, but every day, brightening our connections and uplifting those around us!
Yes, February 14th may carry romantic connotations, reminiscent of my childhood experiences. However, the sweet nothings of that day are mere gestures. Instead of trying to decipher them, I choose to engage in thoughtful behaviors that are practiced every day, not just once a year. These are the true behaviors of Valentine's Day-patience, kindness, generosity, chastity, and love. The reality is, understanding the essence of Valentine's Day is a journey that takes years.
Saint Valentine is a remarkable figure who embodies the essence of love. He is celebrated today as the one who first articulated the idea that 'Loving people starts by receiving love.' His teachings continue to inspire us to this day, shedding light on the true meaning of Valentine's Day.
What about you? Candy and cards or gainful gestures?
