Holidays of Thanks & Giving

For this writer, the essence of Thanksgiving is found in communal giving rather than recounting Pilgrim history.

During this time of year, people are busy with purchasing, planning, and parties. But imagine joyfully letting go of that practice and focusing instead on "thanks and giving." This is evident in the heartwarming tradition of family care packages among organizations, neighborhoods, and churches.

The Family Board Game Project in Austin, Texas, offers screen-free laughter, connection, and shared memories for families facing economic hardship, moving through emergency shelters, or managing tight household budgets. The project not only shows love to strangers but also offers a heartfelt way to ease the stress in the lives of struggling families.

The Family Board Game Project calls us to unite in charity. Our actions reflect the poignant words of Jesus Christ in Matthew's Gospel: "Just as you did it to one of the least of these, …you did it to me" (25:4). Unity makes these acts of charity powerful and inspiring.

This year, I've decided to roll up my sleeves, inspired by many, and join hundreds of volunteers to serve others wholeheartedly. Would you like to join me?

The next Family Board Game Project will run from November 1, 2026, to December 13 for the Central Austin Area, in collaboration with Catholic Camper and Catholic Charities of Central Texas. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating new board games can do so by using this LINK

Your participation or support can brighten a family's Thanksgiving and Christmas season.
